Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

Wednesday, October 11 | The Farquhar at UVic | 7:30pm

“The finest big band in the world today.” – Daily Telegraph London

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) – under the musical direction of nine-time Grammy winner and world-renowned trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Wynton Marsalis – comprises of 18 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today. The Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988, this remarkably versatile resident orchestra performs and leads educational events in New York, across the U.S., and around the globe. With a vast repertoire, this legendary ensemble explores rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln-Center-commissioned works, including compositions by Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, and many others.

As Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City and the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music, Wynton Marsalis has rekindled and animated widespread international interest in jazz through performances and educational activities over the past four decades. Since his recording debut in 1982, he has released 127 jazz, classical and alternative recordings and won many awards, and is known to play until all hours of the morning in the most inconspicuous local clubs. Today, Marsalis continues the renaissance that he sparked in the early 1980s, attracting new generations of young talent to jazz and illuminating the mythic meanings of jazz fundamentals. JLCO with Wynton Marsalis last appeared live in Victoria in 2016, and again online in 2021 during the pandemic for a special Victoria Jazz Society presentation. Don’t miss this acclaimed orchestra’s return in live performance to the island this October!
